DER SAMURAI has been shot and wrapped up!

5 Oct

Dear Friends and Supporters of DER SAMURAI.

Long time it was silent here on the DER SAMURAI page. That’s because we have been working so hard on make this film happen, we had no chance to sit down and go online to let you know about the progress. Please accept our apologies!

But last Sunday we wrapped! We had amazing 6 weeks in the countryside around Berlin, creating mayhem in the villages at night, sleeping at day, everyone gave their best and we believe we have wonderful material for a great film and can’t wait to share it with you!!!
Slowly we’re all recovering from the exhausting work and Till and I will start screening the material next week.

Stay with us, more soon on this site!

Thanks for all your support!!!

The Night Country

31 May

A nocturnal location tour two nights ago turned out quite successful! We might have found most of our major shooting spots now (fingers crossed we’ll get the permissions as well), with only two crucial places still missing – and the ones we have found are amazingly, time-and-money-savingly close to the city. 😉

Going on a location scouting tour is actually one of my favourite parts of the filmmaking process – you get to drive and goof around with friends while everybody else on earth is asleep. Please enjoy some impressions from our road trip:

Hope you like what you’re seeing! And if you do, don’t forget to contribute to our crowdfunding campaign over at indiegogo, if you haven’t already! 😉

Villains and Heroes

31 May

One of the early contributors to our crowdfunding campaign has been Bastian Finke, who with a whooping contribution of $1.5k made the campaign bar rise significantly!

Bastian is not only a hero for that, but much more so for being the head of Maneo, Berlin’s gay anti-violence-project, advising and helping LGBT people who have become victim to acts of homophobic violence. If you would like to learn more about Maneo and their activities, please find their site linked on our sidebar!

By helping us out, Bastian sure earned himself ‘A Night to Remember’ with producer Anna de Paoli, director Till Kleinert and actor Pit Bukowski.

Thank you very much!

Squid & Private Parts in Emerald City

23 May

We would like to let you know as much as possible about our project and what drives us and especially Till to do what we would like to do…

to unleash DER SAMURAI…

Here another part of the interview where till speaks about influences from literature, especially H.P. Lovecraft.

Enter the Dark

17 May

Part of the objective of today’s and yesterday’s location tour was to figure out the visual basics of Jakob’s nightly pursuit of the Samurai. A Fenix TK35 LED flashlight helped us create a great uncanny mood without having any ‘professional’ lights at our disposal for the test.

(Obviously, the people in the shots are not the actual actors.)

It’s quite amazing what two flashlights and a bounceboard can do. Looming shadows, the white ‘dress’ ghostly overexposing, absolute blackness at the seams of the frame. To people knowing me as an avid player of the Silent Hill video games it should come as no surprise that I am very fond of that particular lighting style.

Meet the Gang – Pt. 2

17 May

Martin (dop), Bastian (1st ad) and Till (director) spent yesterday and today scouting for locations south of Berlin. The weather was inconsistent, which ultimately led to this very nice scenario – Till on the left, Martin on the right.

Image Premiere: Things are getting out of control…

10 May

A fantastic new image from our storyboard artists Andreas Bachmann and Sebastian Göpfner has just arrived, capturing a scene from the last third of the film, in which things have gotten, erm… slightly out of hand for our hero.

7 May

The bloodletting will commence in a remote area close to the Polish border. Heralded by the arrival of a wolf, the SAMURAI will emerge from the dark forest and roam the empty streets.

Check out some pictures we have taken on our location scouting tours to get a first impression of what the setting of the film might look like!

Concept Art

7 May

These are some rough sketches by our amazing storyboard artists Andreas Bachmann & Sebastian Göpfert. These drawings are basically the beginning of an ongoing exploration of the visual potential of the titular character as well as of specific scenes. They will not only end up infusing the actual shot and lighting design, but also give us ideas about how to approach costumes and art direction.

They’re really nice to look at on top of that!
